Examples of nuclear decommissioning projects undertaken by AdvanSci staff include:

Oldbury CW Forebay contamination assessment
Client:   Magnox Limited
Scope:   Application of early stages of the Data Quality Objectives (DQO) process to provide confidence in the absence of potential radioactive contamination in the CW intake forebay structure at Oldbury power station, prior to potential early delicensing.
Dounreay Site Closure Project
Client:   Dounreay Site Restoration Limited
Scope:   Review of technical requirements, practicability and feasibility of alternative decommissioning strategies for several major facilities on the Dounreay site
Dounreay Shaft ILW retrieval project
Client:   UKAEA
Scope:   Engineering studies for recovery of Intermediate Level Waste from 65m deep disposal shaft at Dounreay, including:
  • assessment of structural design, foundation stability, infrastructure requirements and buildability issues for two waste retrieval concepts
  • detailed study to assess feasibility of constructing a parallel shaft for waste recovery, including rock stability, excavatability, M&E and safety aspects
  • environmental impact assessments for three waste retrieval concepts, including quantification of secondary waste streams
  • implications of surface contamination for construction and subsequent removal of working platform for shaft grout isolation
Windscale Pile 1
Client:   UKAEA
Scope:   Engineering option studies into the potential of various technologies for use in decommissioning the fire-damaged core of the Pile 1 reactor at Sellafield, including:
  • filling the core with hard-setting liquids
  • cooling and refrigeration
  • drilling and coring

These are just examples to illustrate the range of work performed. For further information on any of these projects, or our other experience, please contact us.
